Backgammon Glossary

Points: The 24 triangles on the backgammon board.

Checkers: The markers that the players use. Each player has 15 markers of their own colour.

Block: A point with 2 or more checkers on it.

Bar: The ridge down the middle of the board which divides the home board from the outer board.

Outer Board: The side of the board that holds points seven to twelve.

Home Board: The side of the board that holds points one to six.

Hit: Landing on a point which is occupied by an opposing blot.

Blot: One checker on a point.

Doubling Cube: A dice which is larger than the regular dice.It has the numbers 2,4,8,16,32 and 64 on it .It is used to keep track of the stakes of the game.

Pip: The distance between the points eg there is 4 pips between the 1st and 5th point.

Open Point: A point that has no more than 2 of your opponents checkers on it.

Enter: Moving your checker from the bar to an open point in your opponents homeboard.

Bear Off: Removing your checkers from the board.
